Fortnite’s Extreme Popularity

Online video game Fortnite Battle Royal has seen unprecedented success since its release in July of 2017. With over 100 million users, it has created a cultural movement never seen before in the video game industry.

It’s free to play, easily downloadable, and cross compatible among all major video game consoles. This along with its simplistic “last man standing” gameplay has allowed Fortnite to reach the levels of extreme popularity it sees today. So popular in fact that people have begun making a living as professional Fortnite gamers, raking in serious views on live-streaming app “twitch” and loads of money along with it (Click Here). Parents have even taken to hiring professional Fortnite tutors to teach their children how to improve and level up in the game (Click Here). Although it may seem all fun in games, this massive attention is raising concerns from speculative adults and even reputable health agencies claiming  “gaming disorder” is a legitimate disease stemming from addiction (Click Here).

Do you think Fortnite is receiving an unhealthy amount of attention? Do you think it’s cultural affect could be seen in a positive light? Do you consider it to be more of a short lived trend or do you believe Fortnite will last long into the future?

  1. Nice post! Speaking personally, I appreciate that Fortnite is inclusive and free of charge, making it accessible to players of any economic status. On the other hand, I believe that this "gaming disorder" that stems from addiction is a real issue, and it is getting out of hand. When adolescents spend more time staring at a screen than experiencing interaction with their peers, it limits their ability to connect socially. I was shocked to hear that this behavior was encouraged by parents to the extent of getting a tutor to improve gaming skills. Although this issue is raising concerns now, I think that this extends past Fortnite and has been a problem for a while now. I think Fortnite is being mistakenly blamed for this issue because of it's current popularity, and parents are to blame for this matter. They should be enforcing rules about time spent playing video games, rather than encouraging this addiction.

  2. I believe that Fornite is getting to much attention and then parents shoudl try and limit there kids’ time playing the game. Kids can easily get addicted to playing video games which is why fortnite has had so much media, and that is a horrible habit to get into as later in life when you have less free time, feeling obligated to play video games will be a major problem. Another negative aspect of it is that it will lower American kids socializing skills, as they often stay home to play video games with friends instead of hang out with friends and social face to face.
